    SS Nurse
Medication policy
When you bring medicine to school:
1. School personnel are unable to administer any drugs from foreign countries or prescriptions filled by pharmacists outside the United States. We feel we need to know what type of medication we are giving and what possible side effects might arise. We are unable to acquire this information on foreign drugs or prescriptions from our medical references. Please be advised, if you feel that your child needs this particular medication, you are welcome to bring the medication to school, and we will call the student
to the nurse’s office for you to administer the drug.
2. Prescription and non-prescription medication must appear to be in the original container. It will only be given to the student whose name appears on the container. Most pharmacies are generous enough to provide an extra container that can be sent to school, with the proper information on it, if you request it.
3. The school must receive a written request to administer medication from the parent, legal guardian, or other person having legal control of the student.
4. Instructions on the request must include the name of the student, name of the drug, amount of dosage and times it is to be given during school hours. (It does not have to be written in English).
5. Medications kept at school for more than ten (10) days require a physician’s statement.
6. All medications that are left at school will be stored in a locked cabinet or container unless otherwise directed by a physician. (This means that if a student needs to have an inhaler kept with them at all times, the school needs that instruction from the doctor, giving the child permission).
7. Please understand we do not like to give medications to children that are strictly prescribed or labeled for adults or medications that will cause drowsiness.
8. School personnel will give only drugs that are FDA approved.
9. If a student needs to carry an inhaler, we must have written authorization from the doctor and the student must demonstrate the proper use.
