My name is Pam Cox and I am a certified teacher of the visually impaired. I have worked in special education for 27 years, most of which were in Stamford ISD and Tri-County SSA in Stamford, TX. I have taught in resource and Early Childhood (called PPCD now) and have never gone more than one year without a student with a visually impairment.
Currently, I serve all of the VI students in the Dumas ISD.
Here are just a few ways that I serve these students.
1. I teach braille to those who cannot access the school curriculum visually.
2. I also provide any modified worksheets and textbooks (braille or large print) that help a student successfully reach his or her academic potential.
3. Helping teachers and other school personnel understand a student's vision issues is a large part of my job.
4. I also provide support to teachers who need assistance in planning programs for their VI student.
5. I work with students who have multiple disabilities, especially those who have more then one sensory issue.
6. Providing the appropriate assistive technology and materials for visually impaired students is one of the most important parts of my job.
